Finding Sandra After Anoxic Brain Injury

by sandra hardy
(key west fla.)

In July 2000 I was taken to our local hospital where I went 10 minutess without oxygen to the brain due to respiratory failure. I was put on a ventilator. I'm told I stayed for a month, then was send out of town to a rehab center.

I don't remenber where I had therapy: to learn to walk and talk and the little things we do in life. I have three children who I had to get to know all over again. I didn't even remenber my father or mother and I cry all the time.

After coming back home and seeing a doctor who put me on anti-drugs for depression its been very hard trying to find me.

Editors Note: Sandra's story is all too familiar as millions of people throughout the world suffer brain injury every year. We applaud Sandra for sharing her story to help others understand what it's like to live with a brain injury.

ABI accident at 13 years old.
by: Anonymous

My son suffered an anoxic brain injury, May 2008, when he was just 13. The day of the accident he was in his father's care and was left alone after school. While playing he was accidentally strangled and went without oxygen for approximately 10 minutes. He has never regained the ability to respond or commumicate. He cannot blink for yes or no. He cannot move any of his body on command. He also does not track. He will look toward the direction of my voice. I am desperate to find a doctor that will treat him. Since he is only 14 many doctors will not treat him with medication the same way they will treat an adult. Can anyone offer information, suggestions or help of any kind.

Thanks Sandra
by: Larry and Beth

Your story almost mirrors Beth's own anoxic brain injury. Memory problems certainly throw us in a loop because they affect so much.

If you don't remember the multiplication tables, those simple math problems of the past are now big problems.

If you don't remember how to cook, well... that has it's own problems, too.

Beth couldn't remember how to put on her makeup, and that led us to developing the many strategies that we've outlined in our book, Brain Injury Survivor's Guide.

You can probably find more helpful information at Beth's Brain Injury Blog.
