Don't believe me, I've had a brain injury
by lynne
(dallas, texas)
I had a ruptured brain anuerysm in sept of 2009 while I was home alone. From what we pieced together, it was 2 days before my son found me. He immediately knew something was wrong and called paramedics. They had no idea what happened and allowed me to sign a waiver of transport. My son was insistent and took me to the emergency room himself. However the small and closest hospital he took me to had no idea what was wrong with me. Thankfully a staff nurse told my family that if they wanted me to make it, to get me to the county teaching hospital, which they did. After my CAT scan, I had my first brain surgery the next day and stayed in a drug induced coma for a month.
Started rehab at the hospital and was transferred to an inpatient rehab facility about 1 1/2 months after my TBI. Stayed in rehab about 7 months and am now home. I feel like I'm back to normal, whatever that is, and want to go back to work. However I have lost half of my field of vision in one eye and wear an eyepatch, can't drive due to vision loss and did I mention that I am a nurse.
The only effect I note from my TBI is memory loss from prior to incident till arriving at inpatient rehab.
