Brain Injury Rehabilitation

South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD) is located in West Columbia. "People with brain injuries have a new resource to help them overcome barriers to employment. Implemented in September 2004 at SCVRD’s Center for Comprehensive Programs in West Columbia, the Brain Injury Program helps identify barriers to employment and develops behavioral and compensatory strategies to improve their work-related performance.

All participants receive a comprehensive evaluation, including vocational and psychological assessments, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutritional guidance, and exercise and fitness instruction. Based on the results of the evaluation as well as feedback from the individual and the family, a behavioral management and vocational plan is developed to address behavioral and cognitive limitations.

Individual and group therapy sessions develop awareness of the participant’s limitations and provide an opportunity to apply and practice compensatory strategies. Session topics include discussion and practice on adjustment to disability, problem solving, anger and stress management, social support, goal setting, memory strategies and substance abuse counseling."
