Brain injury rehabilitation in Alabama is coordinated by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS). ADRS currently has over twenty Vocational Rehabilitation Service offices throughout the state. Their statistics shows that the state of Alabama receives a $21.95 return for each taxpayer dollar spent on vocational rehabilitation. A 1993 study showed that, on average, a person with traumatic brain injury did not seek out rehabilitative services for an average of seven years following the injury. Since early intervention is a major component in successful rehabilitation, the state of Alabama created the Alabama Head and Spinal Cord Injury Registry with the major purpose of getting trauma survivors to much-needed resources as soon as possible after discharge. Children's Rehabilitation Services has care coordinators who have been trained to work with families of children and youth who have suffered traumatic brain injury. Upon verification of TBI in a child, the CRS TBI program will assess the needs of the child and family and coordinate and authorize treatment which may include paying for medication, assessments and neuropsychological evaluations.
