Well, Beth thinks things got a little rocky much earlier than that. Their wedding was planned for May 31; everything was in place, and they were simply waiting on the day to arrive. But Larry received a letter in April from Uncle Sam inviting him to Fort Polk, Louisiana to begin basic training, and he was expected to be there May 29. And he was there May 29. They arranged for a new preacher because their original choice was performing a wedding ceremony for her own son on the new wedding date. Things, however, worked out. Two years later, Chad was born. Four years after that came Sean. Chad married Donna and along came grandson Blake. Life hasn't been the same since. July 31, 1990 - Beth entered the hospital for routine surgery. It turned out to be anything but routine. On August 1 a second surgery was performed to stop the excessive bleeding from an "inadvertent cut" that happened during the first surgery. Prior to that second surgery, Beth received several blood transfusions and the downhill spiral began. Though not proven, it was suspected that the transfusions caused her to develop A.R.D.S. (adult respiratory distress syndrome). She stopped breathing and suffered an anoxic brain injury. Brain Injury Survivor's Guide is the result of what happened during the next seventeen years. Beth and Larry learned how difficult it is for members of the medical community to diagnose and treat brain injuries. They also learned how difficult it is for people who have sustained a brain injury to get the treatment they need. Brain injury victims must re-learn how to live. You've probably seen those stop smoking commercials about learning how to drink a cup of coffee without a cigarette or how to put on your clothes without having a cigarette nearby. Most brain injury victims must re-learn how to do many, many things in life without benefit of remembering how they once did it, but with the knowledge that they "once" could do it as second nature. The purpose of Brain-Injury-Online and its sister site, Brain Injury Guide, is to help family, friends, loved ones and brain injury victims re-learn how to live life successfully. Please Note: A search feature has been added to this site that includes results from Brain-Injury-Online.com and BrainInjuryGuide.org. You can use the search feature here. |
